About me

I'm a UK-trained medical doctor who spent nearly 20 years working in psychiatry before retraining in ecological and functional medicine in 2021.

My work now focuses on mould-related illness and complex chronic conditions, particularly where mast cell activation, persistent fatigue, autonomic dysfunction and post-infectious illness overlap.

I bring together my conventional medical background, specialist training and personal experience of chronic illness to help patients make sense of what can often be a confusing and overwhelming collection of symptoms.

I recognise that complex illness rarely has a single explanation or a straightforward solution. My aim is to provide thoughtful, individualised care that considers the wider picture of a person's health.

My story

My journey into ecological medicine began with my own experience of illness.

Following COVID in 2020, I became increasingly unwell, developing a range of debilitating symptoms that were difficult to explain or manage. Despite my medical background, I found myself struggling to understand what was happening to my health.

It was only later that I discovered a hidden leak beneath the shower tray in my home, which had led to significant mould exposure. Recognising the potential role of my environment in my illness was a turning point.

This discovery led me to explore ecological and functional medicine, and to consider how environmental exposures, immune dysfunction and other physiological processes might interact in chronic illness. As I began to address these factors, my health gradually improved.

The experience changed not only my health, but the direction of my medical career. I retrained in ecological and functional medicine in 2021, bringing together my conventional medical training with a growing understanding of the relationship between our environment and our health.

Having experienced chronic illness myself has also changed my perspective as a doctor. I know how difficult it can be to live with persistent symptoms, navigate conflicting advice and cope with the uncertainty of not knowing when, or whether, things will improve.

It has reinforced for me the importance of listening carefully, remaining curious and treating each person as an individual, principles that now sit at the heart of my clinical practice.

Thriving in the light

✨ Would you like to learn more about how I work? Do you have questions about whether ecological medicine could help you?

How I work

Many of the people I see have been unwell for a long time. They may have seen numerous specialists, undergone extensive investigations and tried multiple treatments, yet still be struggling to understand why they feel so unwell.

I start by looking at the bigger picture. I take time to understand your health history, symptoms, environment and the different factors that may be contributing to your illness. Often, the connections between these are as important as the individual symptoms.

Environmental exposures, particularly damp and mould, are central to my work. I also consider how different systems in the body interact, including immune and mast cell activity, the autonomic nervous system, gut function and the body's ability to respond to treatment.

My approach is careful, staged and individualised. With complex illness, trying to address everything at once can be counterproductive. I work with patients to identify priorities, address ongoing exposures where relevant, and introduce treatments at a pace their bodies can tolerate.

I use investigations when they are likely to help guide clinical decisions, while recognising that tests have limitations and don't always provide clear answers. My work draws on conventional medical knowledge, specialist training and emerging research, and I aim to be open about areas where the evidence is still developing.

I believe patients should understand the reasoning behind recommendations and be actively involved in decisions about their care. Treatment is a collaborative process, and plans need to be reviewed and adapted as we learn what helps, what doesn't and what is manageable.

My aim is not simply to give you a list of treatments, but to help you make sense of your health and find a practical way forward.

Specialist training

Since 2021, I have undertaken further training in ecological and functional medicine, with a particular focus on mould-related illness and environmentally acquired illness.

My principal specialist training in mould-related illness has been with Dr Jill Crista, whose teaching has been particularly influential in my clinical work. I also draw on the work of Dr Neil Nathan, particularly his experience with complex chronic illness and patients who are sensitive to treatment.

I continue to develop my knowledge through specialist training, professional collaboration and ongoing education.
